Plate And Frame Heat Exchanger

Looking around at different types of heat exchangers and come across a type known as plate and frame heat exchanger? What type of heat exchanger is this? How does it work? What are the advantages and disadvantages of having this type of heat exchanger? Let's explore more about this rather large yet unheard of type of heat exchanger.

Plate And Frame Heat Exchanger

The plate and frame heat exchanger works under the same principle of other heat exchangers. In that it allows two liquids to be placed together but not mixing or touching, so that the heat from one liquid or gas can be transferred to another source of liquid or gas. The two liquids or gases are separated by a metal object that keeps them from mingling. In the case of a plate and frame heat exchanger the liquids are separated by thin metal barriers that are held together by a frame, hence the name plate and frame. The spaces between each set of metal plates alternate between hot and cold liquids or gases. The frame is held together mostly by bolts which makes it easy to assemble and disassemble.

The advantages of using such a heat exchanger is that since it is put together with bolts and easy to assemble it is easy to disassemble. This makes cleaning and repairs to the heat exchanger relatively easy and a lot less time consuming. Another advantage is that of the size, it is relatively compact and can fit into areas that wouldn't normally allow other types of heat exchangers.

Plate And Frame Heat Exchanger

The disadvantages of a plate and frame heat exchanger is that there is a chance for leakage of the liquids or gas. The heat exchanger is created to make sure that the liquids to not mix, leakage would cause the liquids to mix and cause potential problems with the heat exchanger.

Many manufacturers sites that make plate and frame heat exchangers can go into greater details on the types of these heat exchangers and which might be the best choice for the project that one is working on. There are a couple different types of plate and frame heat exchangers to choose from and finding the right fit for a project is the best way to proceed in having a successful project.
